Engineering doctorate

The Engineering Doctorate (EngD) is an alternative to the traditional PhD for students who want a career in industry. A four-year programme combines PhD-level research projects with taught courses, and students spend about 75 percent of their time working directly with a company.

Historically, EPSRC supported 20 EngD Centres across a range of research areas and industrial sectors. However, as part of implementation of Centres for Doctoral Training EPSRC took the opportunity to review and renew the EngD portfolio. Thus, the EngD scheme has such as been superseded by a cohort of 19 Industrial Doctorate Centres which represents a mixture of new Centres and continuations (albeit in an evolved form) of a number of EngD Centres.
