The science and engineering of metallic materials is a key foundation technology underpinning the national strategic objective of expanding the UK high value manufacturing base. The new EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Metallic Systems will re-position and increase the momentum of the highly successful programme established in 2009 by the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester – commended for delivering best practice in postgraduate research training.

The Centre will train both PhD and EngD students covering all aspects of metallic materials engineering required by advanced manufacturing to deliver high performance innovative products, including: alloy design fit for purpose; modelling; characterisation; processing; and the simulation and optimisation of new manufacturing processes.
