Browse our portfolio (BoP)

On the main VoP page you will see the above button, if you have JavaScript enabled then you can click on the button to reveal the list of areas to begin browsing from.

If JavaScript is not enabled then you will be taken directly to the Themes section of the BoP system.

Once the menu opens you will have the following options:

  • Themes
  • Research areas
  • Research Organisations
  • Schemes
  • Sectors

Each option when clicked will take you to a variation of the Pack diagram page each offering different options for drilling down through the data as shown below.

Browse area selection

Along the top of every page you will see the above bar which will display the current selected browsing area and allows you at any time to click a different area to start browsing our portfolio using the clicked area as a starting point or you can click the area you are currently browsing to restart browsing.

Once you drill down from the top level of BoP in any of the main sections you will have the option to view the results grouped into areas by the following categories: Themes, Research Areas, Sectors and Schemes

Relationships

The Relationships button is available in the Themes, Research Areas and Research Organisations sections of BoP and when clicked will take you to the Chord Diagram page showing the relationships between the section areas, for example if clicked in the Research Organisations page you will be taken to a Chord Diagram showing the links between all the various Universities in the system.

If you mouse over any of the section areas within the graph it will single out the area being moused over and any other area it has links to to, it will also display a tool tip with the grant count for that specific area.

 

Tool panels

Depending on the resolution of the device you are browsing BoP on you will see the tool panels at the top (lower resolutions) or on the right hand side (larger resolutions) all these panels can be minimized and expanded by clicking the panel heading

Data Tools

The Data Tools panel offers you the option to switch between Grant Value (the default display option for all pack diagrams) and Grant Count, by clicking this button the graph will rescale the sections within area currently being viewed to be able to compare the data by the selected value, it will also sort the areas by the value selected.

When browsing in Research Areas or Research Organisations you will also have the option to View Historic Data.

Once you click the View Historic Data button you will be presented with a date slide and combo box which will allow you to select a specific year to view its related data.

There are two methods available to select your desired year one is to click on the slider highlight box and drag it to the year span you wish to view or use the combo box below the slider to select the year.

Aggregation Tool

The Aggregation Tool allows you to select areas within a section and refine the results you browse from that point forward to the results related to the areas selected.

To start the aggregation tool click the start node selection button, at this point all areas within the diagram will resize to become equal and allow you to click on the areas to select or deselect them.

To finish your selection and view the results click the Use Nodes button

If you wish to stop using the Aggregation Tool just click the Stop Node Selection button and it will return you to the normal Pack Diagram display

Results Table

On every Pack Diagram page below the diagram you will find the results table, this table provides a set of export buttons which when clicked will export the entire results set to the clicked format.

The available formats are:

  • Copy - exports the data from the table to your computer clipboard which can then be pasted into your chosen application with Ctrl + V or by right clicking and selecting Paste option if available.
  • CSV - exports the data from the table to a comma-separated values file which is readable in MS Excel, Open Office Calc or any text editing application.
  • Excel - exports data from the table to Microsoft Excel Open XML Format Spreadsheet file (XLSX)
  • PDF - exports the data from the table to portable document format which can be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader or one of the many other popular PDF readers available.
  • Print - exports the data from the table to your print queue.

The results table offers you the option to search through the results using the provided search box, sorting of results by clicking the table heading you wish to sort by and the arrow will indicate the order of the sort arrow facing up for ascending and down for descending.

At the bottom of the table you will also be provided with tab buttons if there are more than 10 results to enable you to skip through the results.
