Threats to infrastructure

Transportation networks, energy, food and water supplies, buildings, telecommunication and services form parts of essential infrastructure that is necessary for the smooth functioning of society. Terrorism, crime or environmental disasters pose obvious threats to such important infrastructure. However infrastructure, both human and physical, is becoming more and more vulnerable due to its growing interdependence, when, for example, malfunction in information and communication networks can bring down the work of power stations, banks, supermarkets, hospitals or airports, and cause major disruption not only in one country but in a wider region or even the world.
