EPSRC supports excellent, long-term research and high-quality postgraduate training, in order to contribute to the economic competitiveness of the UK and the quality of life of its people. At any one time we are supporting a portfolio of research and training between £3-4 billion.
Note: This diagram does not represent the scale of the EPSRC investment in each thematic area.
Businesses have a key role in supporting the research strategies through co-creating research alongside our world leading academic base. Businesses can work with researchers in multiple ways to achieve our desired outcomes across our portfolio.
The Shaping Capability strategy was introduced in 2011. Over the last Delivery Plan (2011-2015) we mapped EPSRC's portfolio to research areas and undertook a monitoring exercise. Understanding how the portfolio has changed since 2011 was an important input to refreshing our research area strategies for the current Delivery Plan (2016-2020).
The EPSRC knowledge map refresh project provides a richer picture of the UK research landscape through our strategic relationships with Universities, particularly activity within EPSRC’s remit which is funded through other sources. A key objective was to begin to communicate the wider landscape across engineering and the physical sciences to a range of stakeholders including government and business.
