Regional High Performance Computing Centres

In 2011-12, EPSRC invested a total of £8 million capital and £2 million recurrent funding in the establishment of 5 regional Tier-2 Computing Centres of Excellence with matching funding from host institutions and collaborators. This investment provides computing systems of a scale between local University resource and the National HPC Facility, enabling both academic and industrial usage at the same time. The Centres were encouraged to develop commercial, service-oriented usage models for their business users.

The main objectives of the original call for proposals were:

  • Support multi-disciplinary research
  • Encourage and enable industrial usage and collaboration
  • Achieve long-term sustainability
