EPSRC announces new brand for National Research Facilities

Supplementary content information

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) today announced that it has re-branded its Mid-Range Facilities as the EPSRC National Research Facilities (NRFs).

The name change is designed to more accurately reflect their role in the world class laboratories landscape, providing a strategic resource of national importance.

There are a total of 12 facilities that provide leading edge capabilities and technique development at a national level and/or access to European research facilities. The facilities provide access to instrumentation that would ordinarily be beyond the scope of an individual institution.

Last year work done through the facilities had over 2,000 users, engaged with 38 companies and resulted in over 450 research papers. Hundreds of PhD students were trained in how to use the facilities.

Commenting on the NRFs EPSRC's Chief Executive, Professor Philip Nelson, said: The EPSRC National Research Facilities provide additional capability to a diverse user base in the UK and internationally. They are powerful tools for use in the country's scientific endeavours. I would encourage researchers and industry to find out more about where the facilities are and what they can do for them.

Further details of the 12 facilities and how to access them is available at the EPSRC National Research Facilities section of the EPSRC website.
