In the six month period November 2013 - April 2014, EPSRC, with additional support from other Research Councils, Universities, industry partners and the DEL NI, supported a total of 115 new Centres for Doctoral Training; a combined investment of over £950 million.

A summary of the Centres can be downloaded from the "Resources" section of this page.

Here are just some of the activities that have taken place since April.

Recruitment: Over the next nine years the Centres will be supporting over 7,000 students, the first cohorts of which will begin study in October 2014. The Centres are currently recruiting and take-up of places is rapid with many already filled.

Capital: In addition to the funding for Centres and students, a further investment of £32.8 million of Capital equipment has been awarded to 32 Universities (across 94 equipment bundles) to help train the students on state-of-the-art equipment.

This was drawn from the £31 million fund allocated to EPSRC to support equipment for the new CDTs, announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne, in the March Budget.

Sharing: To help share best practice, EPSRC brought together all the Centre Directors at a meeting in London in early July.

Directors shared more information about their Centres, discussed their plans for user engagement and Centre management, and explored opportunities for aligning, sharing or complementing training activities.

It was great to see the enthusiasm and excitement of the new Directors, who all recognised the importance and scale of the task they are embarking upon.
