BARBARA SHOLLOCK

My name is Professor Barbara Shollock, I’m from WMG at the University of Warwick and we’re teaming up with Jaguar Land Rover through EPSRC’s Prosperity Partnerships to research into the next generation of electric vehicles.

What we’ve done through this partnership is to really look at it as an entire system, from the batteries, the power electronics, the electric machines and finally to the torque transmission that will get our electric vehicles on the road. So at the moment technology is out pacing the science underpinning it and the challenge is to really understand what’s happening all the way down to a microscale or a nanoscale. To understand how batteries degrade, to understand how we can have more efficient power electronics, electric motors and even drive trains.

So any sort of efficiency we can make not only in the battery but in the power electronics can add together to give us a longer range for vehicles and that’s really what consumers are looking for.

In this lab we’re interested in looking at cell level tests right from the atomic level, looking at nano metres scale particles that go to make the active material coating on the surface of the electrodes and that’s why we’re here surrounded by electron microscopes, whereas right through at the other end of the scale looking at the cells, the modules and in turn the battery packs that actually go into the vehicles systems.

Behind us here we have a whole range of test cells to look at how batteries operate under a whole range of different conditions, high temperatures, low temperatures, so that we can understand how long they’ll last.

So it’s very important that we work alongside industry so we can understand the needs both short term and long term and to do that in partnership with Jaguar Land Rover will ensure that we’re really directing our research to the right place. We’ll cement that partnership and deepen it in a fundamental research way and it will give us the opportunity to train and skill up the next generation of engineers and scientists in a whole new area. Reducing C0² emissions in vehicles is a worldwide challenge and here in the UK we have the opportunity to really get some momentum behind the work that we’re doing.  With Jaguar Land Rover we can achieve a world leading electric vehicle.
