University Defence Research Collaboration Phase 3

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) continue to engage in a series of fruitful collaborations in signal processing research, running under the banner University Defence Research Collaboration (UDRC) in Signal Processing. The latest incarnation (UDRC Phase 2), entitled "Signal Processing in a Networked Battlespace", is funded by a five-year, £8M joint grant from the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and EPSRC, and is delivered by a collaboration between eight leading universities, Dstl and defence industry.

This collaboration has been highly successful, delivering an integrated programme of research, with engagement from strategic industrial partners who provide commercial driving force to bring research outputs closer to exploitation. A number of instances of UDRC research have already been applied directly to MOD signal processing problems for the benefit of the UK and our international partners. There have been over 200 publications in phase 2, some in the most significant peer reviewed journals such as IEEE Transactions. Examples of significant breakthroughs are found in fields such as low-frequency synthetic aperture radar imaging, micro-Doppler technologies for target detection and multi-target tracking algorithms. Due to this continued success, EPSRC and Dstl wish to continue with a Phase 3 programme, under the title "Signal processing in the Information Age".

Phase 3 will run under an "Underpinning + Applications" model (illustrated in Figure 1). Under this model a core grant will progress underpinning signal processing (USP) research for the duration of the grant period (01 May 2018 to 30 April 2023). This grant will be valued at £4 million and is expected to attract a consortium of leading academic groups from UK universities.
