Automating Science Discovery: call for feasibility studies

This is a call for Feasibility Studies for research that explores the application of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to aid and accelerate discovery in fundamental physical sciences.

This call is being run alongside a call for a NetworkPlus in this area, and the two calls are considered to be complementary.

Automating Science Discovery goes beyond designing improved AI for eventual application, and is not about introducing understood AI into physical sciences research.

A key component of the projects we are looking to encourage and support is the combination of cutting edge and state-of-the-art AI research with cutting edge and state-of-the-art physical sciences discovery.

£1 million is available to support feasibility studies of up to £250,000 and of 18 months' duration.

The application process consists of an initial expression of interest (EoI) to audition via an online form, followed by a pre-audition sift panel. Successful EoIs will be invited to audition in one of two locations and applicants who are unable to travel can deliver their pitch via Skype. Successful auditions will then be invited to submit full proposals which will be assessed by an interview panel in May 2018.

The online form is embedded on this call page. It will close on Thursday 25 January 2018 at 16:00.
