Research is international and many challenges that we face are global. As well as maintaining the strength of UK research, we want UK researchers to be able to work with the best collaborators around the world.
We focus on enabling collaborations with partners in Europe, China, India, Japan and the USA. These regions/countries are prioritised either because they are historically strong in engineering and the physical and mathematical sciences, or else they are rapidly growing their capabilities in our research areas.
As well as acting to further UK researchers’ involvement in EU research programmes, we work proactively with partners in China, India, Japan and the US in targeted joint funding initiatives.

The Newton Fund is a £375 million fund which, through science and innovation partnerships, promotes the economic development and welfare of poor people in partnering countries. It aims to strengthen science and innovation capacity and unlock further funding to support poverty alleviation.
We work with partners in the UK and abroad to help researchers and research organisations to get maximum value from international collaborations and opportunities.
