One of the most abundant waste materials on earth could be used to create energy, according to a research team at Heriot-Watt University.

Dr Shanwen Tao and his research partner Dr Rong Lan, along with Professor John Irvine at the University of St Andrews, are investigating whether urine could be used to create energy via new, low cost fuel cells.

With EPSRC funding they have developed a prototype, the Carbamide Power System.

"EPSRC support has been invaluable in getting this research started and developed," said Dr Shanwen Tao, who is part of the research team. "It is an exciting area that has tremendous potential as a source of renewable energy for the future."
