Introduction to HECToR

The HECToR service consists of a Cray XE6 supercomputer (phase 3), a high-performance parallel file system (esFS), a GPU testbed machine and an archive facility.

HECToR started to operate on 16 October 2007 at the University of Edinburgh?s Advanced Computing Facility. The £113 million service will run for six years and is operated by EPCC at the University of Edinburgh. Support for applications software is provided by NAG Ltd.

The HECToR hardware will be provided in three phases over the service?s duration, the first phase entered service in October 2007, the service is scheduled to run until October 2013.

The procurement project for HECToR was funded and managed by EPSRC on behalf of the UK Research Councils.
