Our remit covers engineering and the physical sciences: research in the areas of chemistry, engineering, information and communications technologies, materials, mathematical sciences and physics. We do not have any restrictions on application areas but the majority of the research we support must be in engineering and the physical sciences.

Grants on the Web
You can search our portfolio of funded grants to see if we have funded any other projects in a similar research area.
Funding across Research Councils
The research councils have a funding agreement for considering proposals at the boundaries of our remits. In addition, we can provide up to 50% funding for medical-, biological- and environmental-related research proposals.
Not Sure Whether to Apply to EPSRC?
If you're not sure whether you should apply to EPSRC or to a different research council for funding, have a look at our remit and funded grant portfolio to get an idea of the research areas we cover. If you’re still not sure, please contact us.
We appreciate that it is often difficult to know where to submit a proposal for research at the interface between two or more research councils. Before you commit yourself to working up a full proposal that might cross research council remits, we would encourage you to make contact with us.
Our Cross-Disciplinary Interfaces Programme has a remit query process in place to help academics whose research spans two or more of the research councils’ remits.
