An International Review of Chemistry Research in the UK was carried out by a panel of international experts in April 2009. This review was part of a series of international reviews organised by EPSRC in partnership with learned societies to provide an independent assessment of the quality and impact of UK research. We use international reviews to globally benchmark the strength of UK research and to highlight any gaps or missed opportunities.
The international review panel, consisting of 18 academics and industrialists, was chaired by Professor Michael Klein, University of Pennsylvania, USA and the UK steering committee was chaired by Professor Jim Feast, University of Durham and former President of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
The Steering Committee also included representation of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, the Chemistry Innovation Knowledge Transfer Network, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Biochemical Society, the EPSRC, the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council.
We provided the Review Panel with various information, including evidence gathered from a wide range of sources, to assist them in the undertaking of their task - a copy of the data document is available below.
The report of the review panel was presented to the academic community at a Town Meeting on 12 June 2009.
EPSRC is currently developing an action plan to take forward the issues and recommendations identified in the report.
If you have any questions about the review, please contact Andrew Bourne, Head of Physical Sciences (+44 1793 444358). Please do not contact members of the review panel directly.
